I
have several methods that I use in teaching. A lot depends on whether
the student is beginning, that is no experience whatsoever, or if
they have already had some sort of organized teaching like band.
Seventy-five percent of the lesson time will be hands on, but occasionally
I use professional videotapes for extra emphasis or as examples.
I also make cassette recordings of lessons if the student needs
it for practice.
If
students do not have the proper equipment to start, it will be necessary
to purchase some equipment. A drum or drum set is not necessary
at first. Mandatory equipment
includes a practice pad, sticks, a music stand, and a method book
or books. Another piece of equipment that is not mandatory, but
highly recommended is a metronome. This is a device used to keep
consistent time or tempo and can be made to go from a slow tempo
to fast. I will recommend name brands of these products before we
start.
For
all beginning students I use the Alfred's Drum Method Book 1. This
is a very good beginning drum book that covers all the fundamentals
and basics.. I do recommend waiting a couple of month’s before
purchasing a snare drum or drum set, just to make sure the student
is going to be comfortable with playing the instrument. Drum equipment,
(like anything else) can get expensive.
